‘We’re blown away’: Beloved Kiwi film app Letterboxd sells majority stake, hints at new features

by Stuff — 7 October 2023

The extraordinary journey of the movie enthusiast app Letterboxd, which has become a runaway success, could easily be adapted into a captivating silver screen tale.

In 2011, New Zealanders Matthew Buchanan and Karl von Randow crafted the app from their offices on Gillies Ave in Newmarket. Just last week, they struck a deal to sell a 60% share to the Canadian investment firm Tiny. Despite this, Buchanan and von Randow will maintain full control of the business, retaining a 40% stake.

What began as modest aspirations to create “a cool film app” has evolved far beyond their expectations, as Buchanan expressed to Stuff, saying they are “pretty blown away by where we have eventually been able to take it.”

Boasting a user base of 10 million individuals spanning 200 countries globally, the Letterboxd social community has left a substantial mark on the industry!
