New Zealand Simplifies Inbound Production Rebates and Lowers the PDV Threshold

by Liz Shackleton — 30 JULY 2023

After a review of the country’s incentive programmes, the New Zealand government disclosed changes to its rebate schemes for foreign and local production. The core rebate of 20% of qualifying New Zealand production expenditure remaining unchanged, the New Zealand Screen Production Grant (NZSPG) has been renamed the Screen Production Rebate (NZSPR). The 5% rebate increase, which was implemented in 2014, has been redesigned to make it more user-friendly and objective. The increase will emphasise New Zealand’s screen workforce development and production activity, recognise repeat business to encourage studios and productions to return and implement sustainability criteria to aid New Zealand’s transition to a low-emissions economy. Eligible productions with a minimum qualifying New Zealand production expenditure of $18.5 million can apply starting November 1, 2023.
