Another Hollywood blockbuster heading to Wellington

by The Post — 6 December 2023

Wellington is set to host a major Hollywood blockbuster that is expected to generate celebrity sightings comparable to the phenomenon seen during the Lord of the Rings era. While specific details about the film are closely guarded, Tanya Black, the manager of Screen Wellington, revealed that it is just one of four productions scheduled for Wellington this summer. Alongside short films and television series, confirmed projects include “The Rule of Jenny Penn” featuring Geoffrey Rush and John Lithgow, and “I, Object” starring Thomasin McKenzie, Melanie Lynskey, Jemaine Clement, and Karl Urban. Additionally, the ongoing Avatar movie series by James Cameron is part of the filmmaking activity in the region. The Hollywood blockbuster’s cast remains undisclosed, but Black assured that the level of celebrity-spotting is anticipated to rival the days of Lord of the Rings, with the production utilising the $50 million purpose-built Lane St Studios in Upper Hutt.
