by Deganz — 26 October 2023

NZ On Air’s Where Are the Audiences Survey 2023 has officially confirmed what previous reports have cautioned —the decline of linear television in New Zealand. This report underscores three key observations that support this trend:

  1. All conventional media platforms are consistently witnessing a decrease in viewership, with television no longer commanding the largest audiences during its traditional prime time slot from 6 to 10.30 pm.
  2. The study has, for the first time, identified significant drops in traditional media consumption among individuals aged 60 and above, while those in the 40 to 59 age group are now at a juncture where digital media consumption surpasses traditional media.
  3. In 2023, a critical milestone is reached, where the collective time spent on digital media by New Zealanders surpasses the time spent on traditional media, marking a shift in media consumption patterns.
