The Mysterious Case of the Missing Movies: What happened to these lost Kiwi films?

New Zealand’s audiovisual archive Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision has a mystery on its hands: What became of three films by Kiwi filmmaker Robert Steele?

Australian ex-pat Steele, who died in 1975, is well-known for making educational and commercial films in the mid-20th century, with titles like What Health Stamps Do and Here is New Zealand.

His fictional work is less well documented, but some important evidence has arrived at Ngā Taonga in the form of a collection of abut 40 mysterious photographs. The photos are behind-the-scenes shots and promotional stills for three films: A Mild Case of Murder, The Wife Who Knew and Happy Honeymoon – A Near Tragedy.
